About Prisoners Rights Clinic

Justice shaped by lived experience.

PRC is a human-rights organization committed to protecting the dignity, safety, and constitutional rights of incarcerated people and their families.

Our story

Founded inside. Organized beyond the walls.

Prisoners Rights Clinic was founded in 2022 by jailhouse lawyers Askari Lumumba and Hassan Shabazz. Their combined experience exposed a persistent truth: people living inside correctional systems need understandable information, organized community support, and advocates willing to demand accountability.

Under President & Chief Operating Officer Marva Austin’s leadership, PRC connects inside knowledge with outside strategy—documenting concerns, educating families, coordinating public advocacy, building coalitions, and pressing institutions to honor the humanity of every person in their custody.

Our commitments

Dignity

Incarceration never erases a person’s humanity.

Knowledge

People must be able to understand the rules and processes governing their lives.

Accountability

Public institutions must answer for decisions affecting health, liberty, and safety.

Community

Families and directly impacted people belong at the center of reform.
